Following Diocesan guidelines the age of preparation for the children is now 7+. Parents are the primary educators of their children in matters of faith and in order to help parents fulfil their duty the ‘Parish’ runs a course of six monthly meetings for parents.
The parents then prepare their children for these sacraments following an approved scheme of work. The work is supported by the class teachers at school and by the ‘First Communion Club’, an after school activity run by Fr. Doug and one of the catechists. For children attending non-Catholic schools who find it impossible to attend, alternative arrangements can be made.
During the time of preparation there is a ‘Family Mass’ each month. The children lead this and the whole family is encouraged to show their support by attending.
‘First Reconciliation’ takes place in February, followed a few weeks later by a ‘Service of Reconciliation’ for the children and their families. The children receive their ‘First Holy Communion’ at the Mass they usually attend, usually over the first two weeks in May, so that the parish can participate in their joy and the joy of their families.
Application forms are to be found at both St. Thomas’ and St. Peter’s Churches during the whole month of September. A new ‘Communion’ programme begins each October. If you wish your child to enter the programme you should return a completed form to the Presbytery before the notified closing date.
